The final installment for the story following Elle, Lee, and Noah and their adventures at their family beach house has finally ended this 3-movie franchise on Netflix. Filmed back-to-back with The Kissing Booth 2 after the successful first movie, it’s quite amazing how Joey King and the rest of the cast were able to keep it under the wraps for over two years.
Now, we all probably know a lot about what happens in the movies, but what took place when the camera wasn’t running? In this video, we’ll be talking about interesting behind-the-scenes moments from the set of The Kissing Booth 3.
Location and Set
Filmed in South Africa’s Cape Town, the film mostly took place on the Flynn family beach house and the pier. According to Newsweek, this house was also featured in Black Mirror, another popular Netflix series. The breathtaking shots of the mountains featured Sentinel, Hout Bay, and the Table Mountains.
What about the schools? As we’ve said, all of The Kissing Booth’s scenes from the first movie to the third were filmed in Cape Town. The school scenes were set at the University of Cape Town for earlier installments, but for the third movie, we see a green screen at the end of the film when they displayed bloopers. The rest of the other scenes, like Venice Beach, The Hollywood sign, and Santa Monica Pier, were just clips filmed in Los Angeles.
Wigs
Joey King, who portrays Elle in the film series, actually had to wear wigs for the 2nd and 3rd films as she had just finished filming the Hulu Mini-series the Act, which required her to shave her head off, so she had to wear a wig while on set and waiting for her hair to grow back.
Breaking Up
Those who aren’t updated with on-screen couple Elle and Noah actually brought some of the romance in real life and sparked an interest. The two entered a relationship while on set for the first film, but some time between the 2nd and 3rd movie filming decided to break up.
It’s quite interesting to think about what happened in between shoots when they were supposed to do romantic scenes together even after a break-up.
Luckily for us, it wasn’t a horrible break-up, and it didn’t translate to awkward acting on screen. It definitely still was awkward for the two on set, though, as in an interview with Howard Shore, Joey King says she would never date an actor she meets during filming again.
Simultaneous Filming
Since the production decided to shoot two films simultaneously, they cut costs by filming all the scenes requiring onset from the second and the third movie. As a result, actors would sometimes forget which of the movies the scenes they filmed were for.
The final scene filmed by the crew was actually for the second movie. It was the scene where Elle Evans and Lee Flynn talked heart-to-heart about their college applications and where they wanted to go.
Even though it wasn’t the last scene shown on screen, for the cast, it definitely fitted to be the last scene to shoot as the two’s friendship was also what started the entire series.
Routine Rituals Onset
Another interesting insight into how the cast’s days went during the filming of the two movies was Meganne Young’s morning ritual. She plays Rachel, Lee’s love interest in the series.
The South African actress reportedly brought morning oats for breakfast every day during the sets, which caught on to other cast members like Joey King and Taylor Zakhar Perez, who plays Marco Peña on the film, started bringing their own morning oats for breakfast too.
