CGI has been a staple for movies since the late 90s. They were able to include many things in the film that we previously couldn’t do just by capturing them in the camera. It amplified a lot in terms of the way things appeared on screen, and costumes, which for the most part were what often remained as physical props and attires, are no exception to this.
In this video, we’ll be listing down 10 Movie Costumes that utilized CGI to end up looking at how they look on screen.
10. Green Lantern’s Suit – Green Lantern
What is a better way there to start this list off than by talking about Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, right? This entirely CGI suit from the 2011 superhero movie is probably the most notorious CGI costume in pop culture as both fans, and Reynold himself have in one way or another thrown shade towards the suit and the rest of the movie for being so heavily reliant on CGI.
9. Black Panther Suit – Captain America: Civil War
King T’Challa’s Black Panther suit that has become one of the easily recognizable icons in pop culture, is different from what it looked like on-screen and onset. This suit, which first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, had to undergo a lot of post-film edits and the CGI team replaced the suit digitally in every frame to achieve the texture we saw on screen.
8. Zoe Saldaña – Avatar
For a film that’s managed to, at one point, became the 2nd highest-grossing film of all time due mostly because of its CGI magic and in-theatre experience unlike any other film in its time, it’s expected that it’d make it to this list. Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri, and all the other Na’Vi in the film made use of CGI for their entire bodies. Actors used complex CGI suits designed to capture all the key points in their bodies to serve as references for the animators.
7. Hela – Thor Ragnarok
Cate Blanchett’s Hela, in arguably the best installment of the Thor films, has become one of the main reasons why the film did so well. Aside from her convincingly badass acting, the costume took it even further. The horns, the armor, and most of the suits were CGI.
6. Spider-man – Captain America: Civil War
Another character in Civil War that was computer generated was Tom Holland’s Spider-man. Like Black Panther, most of the suit was digitally replaced frame by frame to achieve the same glimmer and animated-yet-real-life effect.
5. All the Cats – Cats
Despite the fact that the singing is amazing, everything else in the movie was horrible and borderline horrifying. The star-studded cast of the movie were all acting under bodysuits so that animators could CGI the final looks. Although the end result of the CGI was appalling, it’s still one of the movies that come to mind when we talk about CGI costumes.
4. Enchantress – Suicide Squad
For the not-so-superhero flick, Enchantress is portrayed by Cara Delevingne, who filmed all her scenes in nothing but nude underwear. The rest of her body’s costume, including all the effects that revolved around her, was CGI.
3. Davy Jones – Pirates of the Caribbean
Two words. Oscar-Winning. Davy Jones’ CGI costume in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one of the most convincingly out-of-this-world outfits for a character in modern cinema. Actor Bill Nighy wore nothing but a tight-fitting bodysuit and a couple of dots on his face.
2. Quantum Suits – Avengers: Endgame
The quantum suits the avengers wore to do all their time traveling tasks were CGI for the weirdest reason. It wasn’t an artistic choice but a practical one. The cast was in a tight schedule for filming, and there was no longer time to fit and create costumes individually for all of them, so the production decided to just use CGI.
1. Beast – Beauty and the Beast
Last but definitely not the least for this list is Dan Steven’s Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Instead of wearing a beast costume, the producers decided that the character would be able to better portray emotions if it was animated. As a result, Dan ended up wearing a huge CGI suit and platform shoes to get him to the proper height.
CGI, when done correctly, is able to elevate movies to a certain level. When done horribly, you get something like Cats, an abomination. For the most part, however, they’re always often one of the most interesting parts of movie production.
