As we’ve grown throughout the years, we’ve also grown to love numerous animated characters we’ve come to meet on screen. You may know the most memorable lines from UP or what happened during the 3rd episode of Spongebob’s 5th season, but do you know the actors and voices behind these amazing and interesting characters?
In this video, we’ll be talking about several of the most memorable animated characters to exist on-screen and the individuals behind them, bringing them to life.
1. Jack Black – Po from Kung Fu Panda
When talking about notable loveable animated characters, it’s impossible to make a list without the loveable dragon warrior. The Kung Fu Panda movies made by Dreamworks are very popular with children and adults alike, especially because of Po’s character as the clumsy panda dreaming of becoming a Kung-Fu master. One that comes true when he unexpectedly becomes the dragon warrior.
Although Po is loved because of his chubby, comedic, and whole-hearted demeanor, it wouldn’t have been possible if Jack Black manning the mic behind the character.
2. Adam Sandler – Dracula from Hotel Transylvania
Comedian Adam Sandler has been one of the most successful and iconic comedians of modern media. Still, he decides to bring his talents on screen for another format in this comedic animated film, becoming the voice for the charismatic and funny vampire Count Dracula, the protagonist of the Hotel Transylvania series.
3. Ellen DeGeneres – Dory from Finding Nemo
Finding Nemo is one of the most iconic animated movies out there. Ellen DeGeneres’ entertaining mix of comedy and charisma is brought to the screen with her voice acting for Dory, the light-hearted regal blue tang who suffers from short-term memory loss and is probably the clumsiest fish in the sea. As children, we couldn’t really say why we loved the character of Dory, but now we know why.
4. Mike Myers – Shrek
Shrek is as iconic as can get. Although, as kids, it was 50/50 whether we loved or feared Shrek, we definitely enjoyed the movies. This ended up translating to when we were older when the Shrek memes began.
This iconic green swamp ogre attributes most of its fame to the convincingly comedic Scottish accent Mike Myers gave to the character. Although Mike Myers was already very popular in the comedy world before he was Shrek, it definitely gave him quite the boost.
5. Alec Baldwin – Boss Baby
American actor, writer, and comedian Alec Baldwin were initially known for his dramatic roles, but it didn’t take him long to move to other acting genres. If there are people out there that are great with a plethora of genres, Alec Baldwin definitely is one of them.
He proves this even further by becoming the voice behind Boss Baby, or Theodore Lindsay Templeton, an infant with the mind of an adult who works at Baby Corp.
6. Steve Carell – Gru from Despicable Me
One of the world’s most versatile comedians, Steve Carrel, is best known for his role as Michael Scott from the Office and Cal from the 2011 rom-com film Crazy, Stupid, Love. He plays his role perfectly as Gru, and a testament to this is the film’s success that opened up opportunities to 5 more movies. All of which included Gru in one way or another.
7. Tom Hanks – Woody from Toy Story
Forrest Gump, Captain Phillips, Castaway, Saving Private Ryan, there are so many films to choose from when we talk about Tom Hanks’ success as an actor. However, there’s always one film that seems to always be forgotten. Probably because you won’t recognize Tom Hanks as Woody in Toy Story, or probably because the role was quite unexpected for an actor like him and his genres.
Nevertheless, his role as Woody helped him in his career and the entire animation industry as Toy Story was the first Pixar-Disney collaboration and the first feature-length animated film that was completely computer-generated.
Before this, it was unprecedented. This is even elevated by the fact that the movie was even the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay in the Oscars. If iconic was a movie, the story of buzz lightyear, woody, and the rest of the toys definitely checks out on all the criteria. Some actors are just built for the screen, some actors are also great behind it, but other actors excel on both sides of it.
