GTA: Online
If you’re not an avid gamer, you probably don’t know that the game Free Guy takes heavy reference from is Grand Theft Auto: Online. Anyone who has played any of the GTA variants would probably spot out right away that the movie is based on this open-world action-adventure franchise.
If the gameplay isn’t already a dead giveaway, the city itself is based on liberty city from GTA 4!
Lightsaber from Star Wars
If you missed this reference, you probably need to get your eyes checked. During the climactic fight between Guy and Dude, Guy whips out a lightsaber from the popular Star Wars.
The lightsaber is the iconic staple of the Star Wars universe, appearing in every single movie in the franchise. Wielded by force sensitives such as the Jedi and the Sith, when Guy pulled this out during the fight, you best believe that everyone was hyped to see it!
Gravity Gun from Half-Life
The fight against Dude involves a lot of quick thinking and weapon switching for Guy. After using the lightsaber, he resorted to utilizing the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator from Half-Life 2!
Stifling Dude’s movement and subsequently flinging him away, Guy’s use of the gravity gun was smart and pleased fans of the two-decade-old franchise!
A Marvelous Surprise—Captain America’s Shield & Hulk’s Fist
The biggest turning point in Guy’s fight against Dude, and the most exciting scene of the movie, was when he used Captain America’s shield to block a punch from his adversary. The visualization of how the vibranium shield stopped the kinetic energy coming from Dude’s punch was spectacular!
After blocking one of Dude’s punches, Guy reveals his Hulk fist and uses it to punch Dude to maximum effect. Chris Evans’ reaction was the icing on the cake, which tied up the scene perfectly!
Portal Creation
The Portal franchise is generally overshadowed by the Half-life series, making them relatively underrated. The idea of utilizing portals was a vital part of Millie’s escape in the story!
Guy also used the iconic portal gun in his fight against Dude. It came in clutch when Buddy passed Guy the glasses he needed to distract Dude through the portal. This was a great way of giving the Portal series the attention that it legitimately deserved.
