We’ve all seen our fair share of memes and reactions to the Will Smith and Chris Rock incident during the Oscars. Where do you stand on this? Do you think Chris had it coming for him? Were Will Smith’s actions justified? At what point does a joke cross the line?

Well, everyone has had something to say.

Celebrity Reactions

Aside from all the captured unfiltered reactions from celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce, Nicole Kidman and Serena, and Lupita Nyong’o, who was closest to Jada and Will at the time, a lot of celebrities gave their insights after what transpired.

The most notable is Jaden’s initial reaction to the slap on Twitter. He posted “And That’s How We Do It.” on his account just moments after what happened, and fans are just about sure that he’s referring to it.

Stand Up Comedian Tiffany Hadish was also one of the few who supported Will, saying what he did “meant the world” to her, and she was inspired to see “A Black man stand up for his wife.” She added that as a woman who’d been unprotected, someone saying, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth, leave my wife alone,” on live television resonated with her as to how everyone should have reacted.

However, not everyone was supportive of what Will did. Wanda Sykes, a friend of Chris and a co-host for the Oscars, says she felt awful for her friend Chris and it was sickening. She also said she felt that Will shouldn’t have been allowed to stay and accept the Best Actor Award he received minutes later for assaulting someone on stage.

More Celebrity Reactions

Celebrities like Jim Carrey were disdainful of the actions. Legendary NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said that “When Will Smith stormed onto the Oscar stage to strike Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s short hair, he did a lot more damage than just to Rock’s face.”

Others like Michael Bay also tried to tone down the situation by talking about how he’s worked with him, and he’s not that type of person. He notes that the actions were wrong, but there are bigger issues in the world that deserve attention, like “babies getting blown up in Ukraine.”

After emotions toned down, the awards continued, and Will was eventually called up on stage to receive an award for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard,” the documentary film on the Williams sisters and their father. In this moment of redemption for some, Will apologized on stage to the academy, then talked about how King Richard was a fierce defender of his family and how “Love can make you do crazy things.”

Will Smith Apologizes

Will Smith also apologized to everyone and to Chris the morning after on Instagram. In his post, he said that “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.” He apologized to Chris, saying how he was out of line, and his actions did not indicate the man he wanted to be!

What do you think of this incident, and if Chris Rock should forgive Will Smith?
