Like any other modern cult classic, Mean Girls gets better and better as the days go by. Fans who have rewatched the movie for the 20th time are expected to see and find more details than those who first watched it. Lucky for us, Mean Girls is actually quite detailed, so fans have spotted a lot since its premiere in April of 2004.

Minor Details You Might Have Missed From “Mean Girls”

We’ll be looking at minor details and easter eggs you might have missed from Mean Girls in this list.

Harry Potter Easter Egg

When Janis and Damian, the odd artsy couple in the movie, we’re watching the movie Friday the 13th, when Cady walks in, we can spot a VHS tape of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets is the second installment of the Harry Potter Franchise that came out in November of 2002. Interestingly enough, the franchise’s third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, came out months after Mean Girls came out in 2004.

Xylocarp

Xylocarp is the word that the weird homeschooler spells out at the beginning of the movie. Xylocarp, botany, refers to fruits that have hard woody pericarps like coconuts and durians.

Milkshake by Kelis

At the time of the filming of Mean Girls, Milkshake by Kelis peaked number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. This explains why the song is playing when Regina drives the Plastics to her house. Kylie, Regina’s little sister, was also dancing to the iconic music video in their living room.

Milkshake has become Kelis’s highest-charting single to date, and it will probably stay that way.

Karen’s Gym Class Outfit

You may have noticed that Karen was the only one wearing a sleeveless shirt during their fabulous gym wear entrance. This is because Karen, played by Amanda Seyfried, actually modified her gym class outfit by cutting off the sleeves of her shirt. This adds to the character of Karen and shows us a small detail of what she likes to do.

Lunch Line Map

In another interesting scene that features the odd duo of the film Janis and Damian, we see a map out of the lunch line that features food options like Spam, Fish Sticks, and even Mystery Meat. This is aside from Janis and Damian labeling tables in the cafeteria and were the groups of people belonged.

The Wrong Elephant

We know that Cady is homeschooled for most of her life after living in Africa, but the moment we see Cady’s photo as a child—supposedly in Africa—sitting on top of an elephant, we’re actually seeing an Asian elephant, not an African one.

African Elephants are actually easy to distinguish from Asian elephants. All one has to do is look at the ears. African elephants tend to have larger ears that look like the African continent, while Asian elephants have smaller, rounder ears. The shape of the head also differs.

Walker Brothers Pancake House

Walker Brothers Pancake House, the restaurant in the gift certificate given to Cady for being the Spring Fling Queen, is actually a real chain of restaurants in the Chicago area.

Walker Brothers Pancake House is a restaurant serving the North Suburbs of Chicago for more than 50 years. They have seven locations in Arlington Hts., Glenview, Highland Park, Lake Zurich, Lincolnshire, Schaumburg, and Wilmette.
