15-year record holder for a fastest-selling album by a female artist in the United States, and title-holder for the most incredible debut single of all time by Rolling Stones, Britney Spears has been one of the most successful artists in history. More than her album sales and hit singles, she’s transcended just being a musician and became part of pop culture in its entirety.
However, during all these astounding album sales, hit singles, and even feature films starring her and her rise to stardom, we weren’t aware of what was happening in the background. The Breakdown
By now, you’ve probably already heard of the #FreeBritney movement and the term conservatorship being linked to her, but you’re unsure of what it means or how it started. If we were to pin it down on a single event, most of her fans would say that this was spurred by the singer’s infamous breakdown back in 2007.
Britney, being unable to deal with the newfound fame and annoying media that surrounded her constantly, broke down mentally due to all the stress. She shaved her own head off, which happened after she fled from rehab in Antigua in the Caribbean.
It happened after she tried to visit her sons, and Kevin Federline, her ex-husband, didn’t allow her. This could have been a rebellion from Britney, or a result of postpartum depression, or a combination of both. She even ended up attacking the paparazzi, taking an umbrella and smashing one of their cars.
According to Jamie Spears, the conservative that followed after the breakdown was his attempt to try and put Brit under control following an entire year of erratic behavior. Jamie petitioned courts for what was supposedly going to be a “temporary” conservatorship that has now been going on for more than a decade.
He claims that his daughter was unable to properly take care of herself and manage her assets and business decisions. Jamie persuaded courts to give him the legal right to oversee all the decisions involving Britney’s health, business transactions, finances, and even personal life.
What is a Conservatorship?
To put it simply, a conservatorship is legally defined by the courts as a situation where an organization, institution, or in Britney’s case, an individual, is assigned to take care of someone’s finances, assets, and even personal decisions if they’re deemed unable to take care of themselves by the court.
In her case, it was brought about by the family’s concern for her mental health but also yearning to ensure that they could all get a piece of her money, fame, and influence. The family was divided because of this, and it resulted in her being stripped of the rights she has consistently tried to fight to get back for years. A conservatorship is supposedly only meant to last for a year, but her father has been renewing it every year ever since.
The #FreeBritney Movement
Although it’s hard to pinpoint where it started, and people would assume that it began only recently, FreeBritney.net had already begun to question this conservatorship back in 2009. The site is up and running up until this day and contains news, a timeline, and a list of resources and references.
Today, the #FreeBritney Movement took the internet by storm, peaking at around 2019, when Jamie still ended up renewing her conservatorship despite qualms from many people. Her siblings, mother, and of course fans, have all spoken about how much this has ironically caused more problems to her mental health than the opposite and that she deserves to gain control of her life again.
